June 2017

posted Jun 9, 2017, 12:45 PM by Richard Barden   [ updated Jun 9, 2017, 12:46 PM ]

Dear Methuen High School Community:

The end of the year is near and we are all excited about the rest and relaxation that comes during the warm summer months. In early June, grade nine students are administered the MCAS Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) test. Our ninth graders are scheduled to take the Biology exam, the first of three high-stakes tests. It is important that students focus on putting forth the necessary effort to score proficient and advanced.

Also in early June, we celebrate our accomplished Class of 2017. The One Hundred Forty-Sixth Commencement of Methuen High School will be held at Nicholson Stadium on Friday, June 2, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. As always, there is much joy in sending graduates off to their next adventure, but there is also a feeling of sadness that goes with saying goodbye.

Dear Methuen High School Community:

The month of March is very busy at Methuen High School. The building buzzes with energy throughout the school day and into the evening as students showcase their academic, athletic, and artistic talents. Dear Methuen High School Community:

The first two months of school have passed quickly. Our faculty and students are focused on teaching and learning - academically, socially, and emotionally - in all disciplines. Our school-wide implementation of PBIS has led to the explicit teaching of expectations for student behavior. The high school and district are committed to providing tiered mental health support for students identified through the use of multiple screening tools. Our students’ growth and development is clearly the priority.

We are also focused on our commitment to family and community engagement. Communication is critical and we continue to design and rollout our new student management system, Infinite Campus. In December we plan to provide families with access to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to view attendance and update contact information. In mid-January, parents/guardians will be able to view student grades through the portal. We are excited about the access families will have to essential student information once Infinite Campus is fully integrated.

Our 1-to-1 iPad program is entering its fourth year, and high-quality instruction and student engagement will be a priority in every classroom. Lessons will be designed and delivered to stimulate collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Students will be challenged with the intent of college and career readiness for all. Methuen High School graduates will be prepared for any and every post-secondary opportunity.

In an effort to further cultivate a school environment that is safe, supportive, and conducive to teaching and learning, we will begin our implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The intended outcome is an improved ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students with the goal of increasing academic achievement. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student plans. At Methuen High School we are all about Ranger P.R.I.D.E.: Patience, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence.

A successful high school experience requires committed partnering between community members, parents and guardians, and high school staff. This “village of caregivers” working together will provide the support network necessary for optimal student success. Methuen is a community built on pride, and this pride will inspire and empower students to take advantage of all that MHS has to offer.

It is with great enthusiasm that I enter the 2016-2017 school year as principal of Methuen High School. I look forward to working together to provide our students with a wonderful learning experience. I wish everyone the very best this school year.

Sincerely,

Richard Barden
Principal
