On February 9th, the Methuen High School Mock Trial Club advanced to the round of 32 in the Massachusetts Bar Association’s 2016 Mock Trial Tournament. Methuen High is undefeated, winning region 22 by defeating Lowell 92-87, Central Catholic 96-91 and Andover 86-85. Twenty-three students prepared for the challenging tournament starting in October, meeting at least twice a week for four months. Leading the team with exceptional performances during the three preliminary round trials were Teri Clover, Danielle Joubert, Jacob Greer, Emma Altavesta, Shannon Lilja, and Matthew Karpowicz, earning perfect scores from the judges. Teri, the only one to be in all three trials, was versatile, participating as a lawyer and a witness in different trials. Danielle and Jacob excelled with their efficient attacks on the opposing witness during the cross-examinations. While Matthew, Emma, and Shannon were extremely difficult as witnesses for the opposing sides to break down during cross-examination. The team is currently scheduled to compete in a single elimination round in Worcester on Sunday, March 6. If the team wins the match, they will compete in the round of 16 that afternoon. Congratulations to Mr. Becker and our Mock Trial Club students for this wonderful accomplishment. Good luck in Worcester!
