Art Department Offerings

"If a man has talent and cannot use it, he has failed.  If he has talent and uses only half of it, he has partly failed.

If he has talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously succeeded, and won a satisfaction and a triumph few men ever know."

Thomas Wolf

FA321 Ceramic Design I Level 1 .5 Credit

Students design and create projects from start to finish. Creative thinking, problem solving, use of design elements and principals and technique mastery are emphasized in this course.

FA 331 Ceramic Design II Level 1 1 Credit

This course will focus on more complex projects than Ceramic Design I. Works formed using the potter’s wheel are demonstrated and required. Personal style, creativity, expression and design are emphasized in this course.

Prerequisite:

FA351 Photography I Level 1 .5 Credit

Students will learn the fundamentals of black and white photography, use and care of simple and 35 mm cameras, photographic composition, developing and printing their own negatives and prints. The course will progress to advanced camera and darkroom techniques including action shots, use of lenses and combination printing. Using various photographic techniques, students will visually communicate their ideas through assigned and independent projects in editorials, advertising and photo essays. It is strongly recommended students provide their own 35 mm cameras for this course as there is never enough school-owned equipment to go around.

Prerequisite:

Pass Visual Arts, or Drawing I with a B- or better.

FA 361 Drawing I .5 Credit   (see link Drawing I )

This course is for the student who likes to draw and wishes to develop skill in this area. The second half will stress composition, drawing the figure and face, proportions and using combined media.

FA 371 Drawing II 1 Credit

Students in this advanced drawing course will review art elements and drawing techniques on complex still life, figure compositions, portraits and landscapes. Students will create original self-portraits, illustrations and other studies that show creative use of art elements and media.

Prerequisite:

Pass Drawing I with a B- or better or permission of instructor.

FA381 Sculpture/Crafts .5 Credit

Three-dimensional work is the primary focus of this art course. Projects go beyond the flat surface into such areas as wire sculpture, woodcarving, weaving, tie-dying, plaster sculpture and macramé. The primary emphasis is on increasing student’s awareness of design within 3-dimensional structures, on integrating our multi-cultural heritage with studio artwork and to emphasize an art form that requires less emphasis on illusion, perspective and practiced drawing skills.
