Mission Statement
To provide each and every adult with opportunities to develop literacy skills needed to qualify education, job training, and better employment, and to reach his/her full potential as a family member, productive worker, and citizen. – Adopted in 1993
What is ABE?
ABE stands for Adult Basic Education. ABE is an umbrella term used to describe a range of educational services for adults from basic literacy (including English for non-native speakers of English), numeracy, and high school equivalency (GED)
History
The Methuen Adult Learning Center is beginning its 22nd year and serves over 200 students each year. Students enrolled in the program last year came from 26 countries and 15 languages were spoken. The classes are FREE and are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the City of Methuen.
The Center offers day and evening classes with three levels of English as a Second Language as well as three levels of GED day classes. Although registration is on-going throughout the school year as spaces may become available, the current waiting list for classes is over 250.
Collaborations
The Methuen Adult Learning Center collaborates with the Nevins Memorial Library and the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts to provide tutoring for students waiting to enter the program or who may have work conflicts, childcare or transportation issues which make it difficult to attend classes on a regular basis. The tutoring program also allows students the option to begin their studies now and enter our program in the future. Some of the students enrolled at the Center can also benefit from the extra help now available to them through the tutoring program.
The ValleyWorks Career Center also conducts monthly workshops at the Methuen Adult Learning Center. Students become active members of the Career Center and improve their job search and interviewing skills. As an integral part of America’s workforce, students are constantly trying to balance work, family and school. These collaborations are significant in terms of supporting family literacy and provide a much needed service to Methuen residents in meeting their educational and employment goals.
Registrations are held daily throughout the school year beginning 8/31/11 from 9:00AM-2:00PM and on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00PM-7:00PM
