What is ABE ?
ABE stands for Adult Basic Education. ABE is an umbrella term used to describe a range of educational services for adults from basic literacy (including English for non-native speakers of English), numeracy, and Adult Secondary Education (HiSET- formerly known as GED)
What is Career Pathways?
Classes are specifically designed to meet
the needs of students who are seeking a job
or want a better job while improving their
English language skills.
What is Distance Learning?
It is designed for ESOL students who
enjoy working independently and are
very motivated to learn the English
language outside of a traditional
classroom face-to-face model.
The Methuen Adult Learning Center is beginning its 25th year and serves over 150 students each year. Students enrolled in the program last year came from 25 countries and 13 languages were spoken. The classes are FREE and are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen.
The Center offers day classes with three levels of English as a Second Language as well as three levels of HiSET day classes. Although registration is on-going throughout the school year, it is advisable to complete a registration form as soon as possible.
The Methuen Adult Learning Center collaborates with the Nevins Memorial Library and the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts to provide tutoring for students waiting to enter the program or who may have work conflicts, childcare or transportation issues which make it difficult to attend classes on a regular basis. The tutoring program also allows students the option to begin their studies now and enter our program in the future. Some of the students enrolled at the Center can also benefit from the extra help now available to them through the tutoring program.
The ValleyWorks Career Center also conducts workshops at the Methuen Adult Learning Center. Students become active members of the Career Center and improve their job search and interviewing skills. As an integral part of America’s workforce, students are constantly trying to balance work, family and school. These collaborations are significant in terms of supporting family literacy and provide a much needed service to Methuen residents in meeting their educational and employment goals.
