Methuen High School

XC and Track & Field

PRESS RELEASE:                                                                            January 14, 2010

To: All Media Outlets

From: Methuen High School Track & Field Office

On behalf of Head XC Coach Bill James, Head Track & Field Coach Roger Fuller and the rest of the Methuen High Staff, it is my pleasure to announce that senior, 3-sport captain Jared Reddy has verbally committed to attend and run XC & Track @ the University of Massachusetts ( Amherst ). Head Coach Ken O’Brien has made Jared an incredible offer and overall UMASS is the perfect fit for what Jared was looking for.

Jared recently completed an extraordinary senior XC campaign in which he finished 3rd place at the MIAA State XC Championship @ Northfield Mountain in November. Jared led the Ranger XC team to its 2nd consecutive un-defeated season, a school record 25 consecutive dual meet victories, a runner-up finish @ the EMASS Championship and a dramatic 2nd place team finish at the MIAA All-State XC State Championship.

Coach Ken O’Brien made signing Reddy a top priority and is now targeting other top runners in a very deep and talented Massachusetts pool of athletes. Overall state XC champion Patrick McGowan of Mansfield has also verbally committed and state XC runner-up Anthony Taylor of Arlington is among others who are also potential candidates to join Reddy & McGowan in Amherst . Landing such a strong recruiting class would go a long way in providing UMASS an opportunity to compete at the NCAA XC Championship on an annual basis.

Reddy made an un-official visit to the school with his Methuen teammates in August and toured the athletic facilities and campus. He will make his official visit next week with other top recruits and then sign his national letter of intent on February 3rd.

Jared is expected to continue leading the Indoor & Outdoor Track teams over the final 5 months of his already illustrious high school career.

Jared would like to thank everyone for supporting him. Please read his statement below. Thank You.

Jared Reddy Statement: I really want to thank Coach O’Brien for having the faith in me to provide me the great opportunity to compete at UMASS. I know UMASS has an awesome tradition in XC and I am looking forward to trying my best to help the team continue to succeed. Running is such a big part of my life and I am really looking forward to going to the next level. Once I heard about all the guys coach was recruiting, it became the ideal situation for me. Running close to home at the NCAA Division 1 level is a dream come true but also will be a gigantic challenge. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and get started. I also want to thank my teachers & coaches at Methuen High, without which, I would never have been able to achieve the success I have been lucky enough to accomplish. I would also be remiss if I did not thank my family: including my parents, grandparents, and brothers & sister for also supporting me. Lastly though, I need to thank my teammates who have been with me every step of the way. My teammates are my best friends and they kept me motivated and pushed me to work hard each and every day of practice. I will forever cherish my running memories at Methuen High and I owe most of this to all of the great people I have had a chance to run with over the last 4 years.
